Cabbage palm

Cabbage palm is the state tree of Florida (and South Carolina).



It grows rather slowly but tolerates a variety of conditions, including high water tables and high salt content.



The one above and below were taken right behind my research stands.



After 60-70 years, they'll get as tall as those below (80-90 ft).



Below you can see the massive flower/fruit clusters that come out below the most recent batch of leaves. The fruits are no good to eat, but folks in the south often cut out the 'hearts' (the top bud) for food.



This species is by far the most common palm tree that we see in this part of Florida. It's widely planted around town as well.



It has huge leaves.



Makes a nice outline around sunset time, too.
