In my opinion, it suffices to say that you must go and see it for yourself if you ever have the opportunity. Or, make the opportunity to go see it.

Wild horses greeted us and the other tourists as we got off the ferry. These are part of an unmanaged herd, which means that they are wild and unfed just like the deer or turkey or hog population on the island. Except if, in the words of one of the rangers, "...one drops dead in front of a tourist" will they touch the horses.

Awesome photographs! I visited Cumberland Island a few years ago and was amazed - it is one of my favorite places ever. The wildlife watching there is really great. And I just have to correct you - the bird you have pictured there is a laughing gull, not an oystercatcher :)
Yeah, it is quite the place. Thanks for the correction, I'll update it now :)
We saw a sign that said "rare birds nesting" and I'm pretty sure that it was the pictured guy's mate. So I looked up uncommon birds for the area and oystercatcher seemed to fit. Whoops.
Wish you were there to tell us about that and all of the other birds we didn't know. Actually, you would have loved it because they were celebrating international migratory bird day, or something, with several interactive stations set up along some of the main trails. We played Jeap-Birdy with one of the rangers before getting on the ferry to go back home.
We saw porpoises too. It was great!
