Manatee Springs

Michelle and I visited Manatee Springs yesterday to look for, yep, manatees. We didn't see any, but it sure was a beautiful day to be out. As the name suggests, this particular spring is one of the best places to view, even swim with, wild manatees as they travel out of the cooling gulf waters into the warmer spring-fed rivers of north central Florida. It's either that or spend time in the warm effluent of power plants around Tampa.

Cypress "knees". I was always told that these "knees" provided oxygen to the tree's roots from the air when floodwaters would eventually deplete oxygen levels in the soil. Well, turns out they don't really do that. There is still much debate about their purpose, including one side that says they were there to prevent dinosaurs from browsing on the tree's foliage.

Kayakers on the spring run, which, in this case, is about 300 yards of stream between the spring itself and the Suwannee River.
