Nearly every Friday for the last 2 months, Mike, a labmate of mine (second on the left), has delivered "Ecua-lunch" to a number of people in our lab and department. It has become a nice tradition. Mike spent 10 years in Ecuador, at which time he met his wife Emma. She is the one actually responsible for these meals. They typically include meat in some kind of spectacular sauce, fried plantains, rice, and a fresh salad. So, she puts the meals together and he brings them to school. The best meal so far has been cazuela, which is fish or shrimp in blended plantain and peanuts, served piping hot.
On a related note, Michelle and I decided that we will have to "relearn" Spanish. We went to a different labmate's (originally from Costa Rica) birthday party last Saturday and found ourselves to be 2 of only a small handfull of people, in a group of at least 60, that did not speak fluent Spanish. Another example; twice has the conversation at these Ecua-lunches shifted entirely to English on my behalf. More than those pictured above come and go; all speak Spanish.
Here a few pictures of campus in recent days.
